LAKEWOOD, Ohio – In an effort to identify and address current health and wellness issues affecting residents of Lakewood, the town, along with the Healthy Lakewood Foundation and the Three Arches Foundation, are conducting a needs assessment in community-based health (CHNA).
After a year of data collection efforts, an action plan will guide future efforts to maintain strengths and address gaps, weaknesses and barriers to equitable well-being.
“In 2019, the Live Well Lakewood Task Force highlighted the importance of understanding the social determinants of health and the different impacts they have in our community,” said Lakewood Mayor Meghan George.
“ACHA’s effort reflects the recommendation of the task force. It builds on past efforts and will take advantage of a broader community participatory approach to assess current needs within our community. Once completed, the evaluation and action plan will be very critical for the implementation of a health-centered approach to actual programs that serve all residents of Lakewood.
The Center for Community Solutions strategic consultant helps produce the in-depth study and subsequent action plan. Beginning in the coming months, the effort will first focus on a thorough assessment of the community’s current strengths and weaknesses in relation to the social determinants of health.
The participatory project – surveys, focus groups, etc. – will include interacting with people from Lakewood’s diverse community to generate critical information and residents’ perspectives.
As a community partner in addressing systemic and structural health equity issues, the Healthy Lakewood Foundation prioritizes the experiences of those most affected by health disparities as it identifies ways to share resources and collectively solve problems.
“We know that social determinants – the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age – have a significant impact on health,” said Kate Ingersoll, president of the Healthy Lakewood Foundation. “This comprehensive assessment will serve as a guide for collaborative planning and action by organizations in our community committed to addressing the social determinants of health as we work together to improve health and well-being in Lakewood.”
The Three Arches Foundation’s involvement is tied to future grantmaking efforts to advance the health and well-being of Lakewood residents.
“When you talk about the health and well-being of a community, it is important to understand the ever-changing social and economic factors that impact an individual’s health status and access to healthcare. health services and support, ”said Kristin Broadbent, President and CEO of the Three Arches Foundation. .
“With the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in mind, the timing for this assessment is an opportunity to collect up-to-date health statistical data through community engagement and collaborative participation enabling a shared insight to then determine and address health priorities in the Lakewood community. “
The mayor said that CHNA’s efforts and the development of an action plan will continue for some time.
“The assessment and development of the action plan is expected to continue through 2022, but the coordination, implementation and potential refinement of all the action elements necessary to achieve our goals and objectives will continue in the years to come, ”said George.
